A Digital Twin is a virtual replica of a physical object, process, or system. It's not just a pretty 3D model; it's a dynamic model that feeds on real data and evolves over time, reflecting the exact state of its physical counterpart.

Applied to outdoor assets, the Digital Twin of an installation —a solar plant, an industrial park, an irrigation network— allows you to visualize where assets are, how they behave, and simulate what would happen if we change certain variables (e.g., "What energy savings would we have if we changed all the luminaires in this industrial park to LED?").

Digital Twin maturity levels

You don't need a video game-like 3D model to have a useful Digital Twin:

Maptainer and the descriptive digital twin

For most operators of outdoor assets, the immediate goal is a reliable descriptive digital twin. Maptainer builds that foundation: every asset inventoried on its real geometry (point, line, or polygon), with its composition hierarchy, technical properties, photos and documents, and its work order and incident history. This lets technicians consult and analyze the installation —a solar plant, a private irrigation network, a business park— before traveling. Real-time sensors, simulation and predictive models are outside the scope of Maptainer.

It's the essential foundational step before dreaming of complex simulations.
